The marriage of a U.S. citizen with a foreign national is a very complex situation because it creates many problems on a legal front. There are two types of marriage based visas in the U.S. The first one is called the fianc\'e9 visa and the second one is called spouse visa. The technical name of fianc\'e9 visa is K1 Visa. The technical name for spouse visa is K3 visa. Both these visas are needed to be acquired at the two major stages of one's marriage, namely at the time of marriage and then after the marriage.

Let's first discuss about fianc\'e9 visa, that is, K1 visa. A K1 visa is required if a foreign national wants to get married to a permanent resident in the U.S. This visa permits a foreign national to come to the U.S. for the purpose of marriage. There are certain clauses in this visa that needs to be taken care of.

The first thing that this visa states that it permits a foreign national to enter the U.S. on a temporary basis for the purpose of their marriage only. The person who is entering the U.S. with a K1 visa will have to get married within a specified time period of 90 days. Otherwise he or she will have to leave the country.

In case this person has to leave the country within that specified period of time without getting married, then the person will have to apply for fresh visa if required to come back.

The second type of marriage related visa is K3 visa. This is commonly known as spouse visa. This visa is required when a foreign national marries a U.S. citizen and wants to settle down in the U.S. This visa permits a foreign national to live and work in the U.S. till the time the status as immigrant is achieved. This visa is provided between the intervening period when the process of getting a Green card is taking place.

Getting a Green card is a very lengthy process which takes two to three years to complete. So, to facilitate a couple to stay together in this period, a K3 visa is given. This visa permits them not only to live in the U.S. but also work using their K3 spouse visa.
